In a different timeline… Imagine that The Great Library of Alexandria never perished and still stands intact today. This would allow us to have a better understanding of what the world was like before the library perished and the library might be able to help us answer some of the unsolved mysteries from our ancient history. Now, consider our timeline… For your writing challenge, create your own unsolved ancient mystery that emerged shortly before or after or during the library’s construction. Then, write a passage from three first-hand witnesses who each explain what exactly happened that would solve the mystery. Assume that the mystery can only be solved when all information from the library is fully accessible (i.e., before the library burned). Each passage must include some narrative points of contention but the answers to the ancient unsolved mystery must mostly be the same from all three perspectives. Try your best to ensure that each of the three passages are written in a distinct writing style and voice.

Creativity & Originality

"The story is a well-conceived mystery that makes an effective hook by presenting it as a university lecture, supported by historical documents, and gradually unveiling the puzzle. However, it is somewhat of a disappointment to realize that the solution relies on common-sense architectural knowledge rather than ancient magical secrets. It is hard to deny the cleverness of the underlying idea, but the mystery itself was not particularly difficult to unravel."

Structure & Organisation

"The framing of the piece is well done, with the lecture being able to smoothly transition into each source before coming together in the end. Information is gradually given out in an appropriate manner that lets the reader deduce information along with the students. However, some parts of the lecture have drawn out conversations that could have been shorter."

Engagement & Impact

"The mystery is riveting, especially how each document reveals another clue. Some scenes are set in a classroom where some light-hearted banter breaks up the exposition, but overall, due to its very nature as an exposition-heavy piece, it has more weight as an intellectual exercise than a dramatic one."

Grammar & Spelling

"The writing is polished and easy to follow, with only a few grammatical inconsistencies and some odd phrasing here and there. The dialogue is well-written and the various personalities come through clearly."

Prompt Adherence

"The submission answers the prompt well by focusing the majority of the writing on the mystery of how the knowledge in the library survived. Instead of jumping to conclusions, the writer gradually gives more and more information leading up to a resolution of the mystery. The writer leads the reader through the same process of elimination that the students used to solve the mystery. The clues given by the documents and the classroom discussion are all used together to come to a reasonable conclusion. The writer uses all the scenes in the mystery that relate to solving the prompt to do well and fully answer the question. All in all, the submission answers the prompt very well. It uses all the clues given as part of the mystery to come to a reasonable resolution. "

Overall

"This submission stands out due to its excellent mystery, which the reader unravels by following the clues correctly. The use of lecture as a framework within which the mystery is placed is smart because it allows the professor to give his perspective on each particular piece of history presented without disclosing the solution right away. The attempt to explain how the Library of Alexandria was protected by volcanic rock and the principles of acoustics that allowed the protection within the building is particularly ingenious and gives a satisfying sense of closure to the reader after the solution is revealed. Perhaps some pieces of the historical excerpts feel too long and could be shortened for the sake of brevity before the next mystery is unveiled, and perhaps, developing the character of Faust Vilien would give more satisfaction when the true nature of the antagonist is finally disclosed. Yet, these are minor complaints about what is otherwise well-structured, coherent, and engaging writing that makes good use of mystery genre mechanics to present an intriguing historical novel."

There have been many people in the world who have claimed to have been reincarnated and have retained some memories of their previous life. Create a fictional character that is human and has been reincarnated into another human body. Imagine your fictional character is experiencing a significant moment in their current life and they suddenly recall a similarly impactful moment from their past life. Vividly describe this experience of simultaneously experiencing a significant moment in the character's current life while recalling a similar impactful moment from the past life in a short story. Please do not just select any event from the character's lives and write two completely unrelated stories. The two events must relate with each other in a clear and creative sense, and they must be marginally similar. You should indicate when in the short story does the character think about their current event or about their past life experience. Suggestion: Use regular formatting when writing on the character's current life and use italics when writing on the character's past life.

Creativity & Originality

"27/30 — I was impressed by the direction you chose to take. Many students tend to approach reincarnation in a predictable way, but you avoided that and explored it through artificial intelligence instead. That decision made your piece stand out immediately. The idea that a machine could carry on a person’s identity—and even generate its own version of memory—was handled in a thoughtful way. The letters, in particular, were a strong touch."

Structure & Organisation

"22/25 — Your structure is clear and easy to follow. The interview format works well as an entry point, and the progression toward the reveal is logical. However, the middle section runs longer than it needs to. The extended explanations and letter excerpts slow the pace and slightly weaken the build-up. Tightening that section would make the story more controlled."

Engagement & Impact

"23/25 — The dialogue carries the story well, and there’s a steady sense that something unusual is happening beneath the surface. The final lines are particularly effective—they leave the reader with something to think about. At times, the more technical discussion pulls focus away from the emotional tension, but overall the impact is solid."

Grammar & Spelling

"9/10 — In terms of technical writing, this is a strong submission. The dialogue is clear and the narration is consistent. There are a few minor phrasing issues, but they are small and easily fixable with careful editing."

Prompt Adherence

"5/10 — While your story connects to the idea of reincarnation, it does not fully follow the prompt. The task asked for a character experiencing a present moment while recalling a similar moment from a past life, and that structure is not clearly present here. Your interpretation is interesting, but in a competition setting, meeting the prompt closely is important."

That decision made your piece stand out immediately. The idea that a machine could carry on a person’s identity—and even generate its own version of memory—was handled in a thoughtful way. The final lines are particularly effective and leave the reader with something to think about. The main area for improvement is prompt adherence—the task asked for a character experiencing a present moment while recalling a similar moment from a past life, and that structure is not clearly present. You have a strong idea—now it’s a matter of shaping it to fit the task more directly."

Choose One Prompt and Answer: 1. Heroes persevere and succeed where others fail. But what happens when the hero falls from grace? Write a short story about a fictional hero who turns evil. Be sure to show the moment the hero falls and highlight the reasons for the turn in a way that makes sense to the reader. 2. Villains are people too. They can have a change of heart just as easily as anyone. Write a short story where the villain decides to turn to the light. Make their motivations for both doing evil and turning away from evil as believable as possible. The more evil the villain, the better.

Creativity & Originality

"30/30 — This piece displays remarkable creative brilliance. The world-building, character exploration, and the villain's moral transformation are not only original but executed with a maturity rarely seen at this level. Symbolic elements—light, corruption, madness, and rebirth—are woven seamlessly into the narrative, enriching the thematic impact."

Structure & Organisation

"22/25 — The document is generally well-structured with a clear narrative arc. However, refining some of the extended, richly descriptive sentences into more concise structures would elevate the pacing even further and enhance overall readability."

Engagement & Impact

"25/25 — The student demonstrates exceptional written fluency and an impressive ability to articulate complex emotions and philosophical ideas with clarity and depth. The narrative voice is consistently expressive and engaging, drawing the reader into the world with vivid detail."

Grammar & Spelling

"9/10 — The writing is polished and clear, with only minor grammatical and syntactic hiccups. Sentence structures are generally effective and spelling is consistently correct."

Prompt Adherence

"9/10 — The submission thoroughly fulfils the intent of the prompt. The villain's motivations for both doing evil and turning away from evil are rendered with exceptional believability and psychological depth."

Overall

"This submission goes far beyond the expected scope for the assignment. Its length, ambition, and level of detail resemble the early chapters of a fantasy novella rather than a standard prompt response. The psychological nuance, expansive world-building, and thematic sophistication reflect extraordinary effort and talent. With further editing, this piece has real potential to grow into publishable fiction. A genuinely outstanding achievement!"

From the unique country names like "Ruralinia" and "Orcania" to the blending of socio-political commentary within a fictional fantasy framework, the writing is both creative and thought-provoking. The originality of portraying country feedback through the lens of a worldbuilding exercise adds further depth and personality."

Structure & Organisation

"22/25 — The document is generally well-organized, with each fictional region clearly delineated and explored through consistent subtopics. However, the presentation would benefit from stronger visual structuring—such as clearer headers, consistent formatting, or bullet points for complex lists—to improve readability and accessibility."

Engagement & Impact

"23/25 — The narrative style is both immersive and engaging. The use of in-universe terminology and character-driven commentary sustains interest throughout. The writing effectively builds a compelling and often humorous tone that captures the reader's imagination."

Suppose that humanity has evolved enough to thrive in an intergalactic civilization. Our species has somehow found a way to travel and communicate with each other across intergalactic distances without being affected by time dilation. However, not all planets in our Milky Way Galaxy, which are referred to as the "dumper planets," have access to these newest cutting-edge technologies. On one hand, the "dumper planets" are plotting to reverse-engineer these technologies without testing them under the supervision of the galaxy's most skillful scientists and under controlled environments. On the other hand, the Galactic Council has been warned about this situation and is plotting to destroy all the "dumper planets" before these technologies are recreated. Imagine that you live on one of these "dumper planets" and are warned about the incoming intergalactic conflict. You are then selected to represent these planets and are asked to negotiate with the Galactic Council to avoid an intergalactic war. Your challenge is to write a persuasive speech, outlining how the "dumper planets" and the rest of the Milky Way can come to a compromise by allowing all planets to have access to the same cutting-edge technologies. In addition, your speech should propose how technological inequality between planets can be avoided in the future so then intergalactic conflict would not escalate and cause war.

"28/30 — The formal, serious tone immediately establishes the gravity of the situation and suits the brief. Reclaiming the planet name is powerful and the description of Carbora, using multiple senses, is evocative. The bioterrorism/mass sterilization weapon twist was completely unexpected — the sharp contrast works very well."

Structure & Organisation

"24/25 — The speech is well-structured with a clear arc: introduction, positive case, rebuttal of fears, then the shocking twist. The transition into the bioweapon reveal is seamless."

Engagement & Impact

"24/25 — The formal register does however make the two contractions in paragraphs 2 and 3 a bit jarring; maintaining a consistently formal style throughout would be best."

Grammar & Spelling

"9/10 — The subversive twist on a diplomatic speech format is highly original and memorable."

Prompt Adherence

"8/10 — The piece adheres well to the prompt, though the resolution leans more toward coercion than true compromise."

Overall

The formal register does however make the two contractions in paragraphs 2 and 3 a bit jarring; maintaining a consistently formal style would be best. Reclaiming the planet name is powerful and the description of Carbora, using multiple senses, is evocative. Initially, the speech feels extremely calm and diplomatic — perhaps overly so. The appeals to reason and morality, while well-structured, do not seem persuasive and come across as overly idealistic given the audience is motivated by power, control, or self-interest. However, because of this, the bioterrorism/mass sterilization weapon twist was completely unexpected — the sharp contrast works very well."

Suppose you are in a lucid dream of your own creation. This lucid dream lasts for an entire month in your dream world but only one night in the real world and you have complete control over what happens in this dream. Write a 2000-word short story that vividly describes the experience of having this dream. This experience does not need to be exclusive to the events you encounter in the dream itself. Some parts of your story can focus on what happens to you and your surroundings before and after the dream. Finally, the dream you refer to does not need to be a dream you have had before (i.e, you can make up all the relevant details as needed to complete this challenge).

(Helpful Timeline for this Writing Challenge) Present (2024-2100) > Future (2100-2500) > Far-Future (2500-) Imagine it is the year 2495 (the future) and that civilization has somehow invented a new device that allows anyone to retrieve information from the future before the year 2500 (before the far future). Although this new device always accurately predicts the exact details about any event in time, it can only tell users what exactly will happen before the year 2500. A spy technician sent from the far-future is tasked with secretly correcting the code in the device by the year 2500 so then it may continue to function properly until humanity's extinction. Your challenge is to write a 2000-word classified-style document written from the perspective of the people in the far future who employed the spy, clearly outlining the benefits and impacts of continuing the programming of the device and why it is ultimately decided that the device must remain until humanity's extinction despite the apparent chaotic, emotional, and existential crises that people face when using the device in the future (2100-2500). Provide compelling case studies that stand for and against the usage of the device.

"19/20 — Exceptional creativity. The use of a transcript format is inspired and allows for a more casual, creative voice. Craigslist still existing in 2133 is a genuinely funny touch. The self-fulfilling prophecy mechanic is clever and realistic."

Structure & Organisation

"17/20 — Communication and structure are strong. The redacted-document style fits well with the brief. The little intro and ending scenes go beyond the task in a delightful way."

Overall

"The redacted parts fit will with the brief. The use of a transcript is good, and allows you to get away with writing much more casually/creatively. Craigslist still being a thing in 2133 is hilarious. The self-fulfilling prophecy bit is fun (and realistic). I liked that you went beyond the task by writing the little intro/ending. While Device X and ___ Special Agency are fine as names (the government and forces that be are often surprisingly banal), a more fun name could've been interesting (the CIA is notorious for backtracking fun acronyms, for example). I would recommend reading the dialogue out loud to yourself just to double check that it flows naturally. I'd also recommend editing again from bottom-up, as the writing gets less tight towards the end."
